Modifications
Court orders for child custody, child support and alimony are not written in stone. If your circumstances have changed, you can seek a modification.
I am Sanders Law, P.C., a child custody and support modification lawyer in Macon, Georgia.
The following are examples of the types of modifications I handle:
- Child support: A significant change in the financial circumstances of you or your ex can result in a recalculation of child support payments. Examples of a change in financial circumstances include job loss, promotion, pay increase and pay decrease. A change in your child custody arrangement can also affect child support.
- Child custody: If there is a change in circumstances in your family that affects the best interests of your child, your child custody and visitation arrangement can change. Examples of a change in family circumstances include a proposed relocation, alcohol or drug abuse by a parent, child abuse, a change in the home environment, school performance or behavior issue, and the wishes of a child over 14 to live with a different parent.
- Alimony: In Georgia, alimony automatically stops if the recipient remarries unless the agreement specifically states otherwise.
Until and unless you obtain a court-ordered modification, it is important to follow your court orders or you could be found in contempt. A verbal agreement with your ex is not enforceable.
